As a professor of intensive care medicine, I have been appointed Medical Director of a highly specialised hospital unit: one of the main European burn centres for the treatment of near-fatal casualties after fire accidents and explosions. The unit is jointly funded by the General Hospital of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna.
After graduation in medicine at the University of Vienna in 1989, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular biology at the Royal Free Hospital, Medical School London in 1990, I completed my specialisation in anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine at the General Hospital of Vienna — one of the most modern and largest hospitals in Europe.
Based on my research and clinical experience, I work and teach as a professor of anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine at the Medical University of Vienna. The core area of this work includes clinical research on artificial ventilation in patients with severe airway and lung disease, the development of standards in the management and organisation of acute care for severely traumatised burn patients, and lectures in these fields for nurses, students, medical doctors in training, emergency doctors, and other professionals.
My medical research has been published in various national and international journals, and can be accessed via PubMed or Medline. I also review research projects and scientific data submitted for publication to European and American science editors. As a certified risk manager, I strive to improve patient safety and encourage the development of a contemporary risk culture in clinical procedures.
